Stairway to Heaven

This Lead Zeppelin song, ‘Stairway to Heaven’ is on almost everyone’s top 10 Rock songs of all time. Stairways to heaven are a common human theme in dreams, ancient myths and many religion’s holy writings.  This song is not definitive in its meaning but certainly can elicit a strong internal vision within the introspective listener.

I like this song because it reveals one of the greatest secrets of spoken English, or for that matter any language.  Poetry.  Yes poetry, if you wish to touch men’s souls, attract women, or communicate well on any occasion the art of the simple is poetry.  Poetics are not for sissies.  Poetry takes words and develops feelings, ideas, tapestries of the common within our psyche.

For the English learner, I have often said that the poetic use of a limited vocabulary is the best path in effecting good speaking skills.  This song shows us the use of many poetic devices.  Metaphor, allegory, word pictures of almost an abstract work of art, but in our minds.  The subtle transitions from word picture to word picture is amazing!  Do not take this song lightly.  There is a wealth of information and nuance for anyone who wishes to communicate with the spoken word.
