This song, American Pie, is probably the most discussed song of American music culture, ever.  It certainly describes the changing of musical styles from the happy-go-lucky 50′s rock-a-billy and rock ‘n roll to the heavy counter-culture rock and protest songs of the 60′s.  However, on closer viewing we find that it is also very much about a national cultural paradigm shift.  The metaphor and allegory are found almost every verse.

This song may certainly be used by any English student who enjoys the melody and style.  It is extremely long and provides so much material for discussion, that I think an advanced student could spend a year with this one song.  After this song, one could probably pass the Englsih exam but also history, social studies and popular comparative ethics courses based on America (U.S.).  Note that there is some excellent resources on the last page of the worksheet for more in-depth understanding of this song.
